We incorporated Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT into our business prior to opening our children’s hospital to ensure we had a system to support a project of this magnitude. Having a financial system that works and is integrated with our donor database Raisers Edge NXT provides efficiencies we never experienced before. Managing and accounting for numerous designated restricted funds is key in reporting to our stakeholders. The accountability the system provides gives us the confidence and transparency needed to meet our goals and ensure compliance throughout our organization.
  • Fund accounting
  • Automated reporting
  • Dashboards
  • System speed
  • Direct debit processing for Canadian customers
  • Bank feed
It is well suited for mid to large sized organizations that want to invest in an infrastructure that will lead them forward into the future. Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT offers real time reporting to enable data driven outcomes. The cloud based system allows for access anywhere at anytime. With constant updates and new features being added, Blackbaud strives to deliver the best product to their customers.

I use FE NXT for posting journal entries into ledger, extract information using the reporting function and also update fixed asset details
  • In Journal entry, love the ability to search for entries using a few key words or the JE number itself. Also love the ability to attach documents easily
  • In reporting, love he ability to search for entries using a few key words
  • In fixed asset module, love he ability to search for assets directly using the assset number
  • In JE, would like thge ability to add lines at specific locations and not at the end of JE. Also like to be able to copy selected JEs easily.
  • No Query function in NXT, that is a problem for us
  • Cannot add Defined depreciation in calculationdepreciation
Great for GL functions such as easy creation of JE, include attachments and versatile reporting The organization of reports into various categories are not as nicely display like in database view. Looks rather messy and disorganized. JE does not allow insertion of new lines at specific locations but rather at the end of JE. Also does not have copy function.

We use Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT as our GL package, we have used the database version for years and now are using Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT more often. We are still learning the ins and outs of our specific needs, but I really like the reports. The reports are easier to access.
  • Reports
  • Vendor Information
  • Adding new funds
  • Import Journal Entries
  • Asset Allocation
Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT is great for fund accounting-this works well for many levels of accounting.

We use Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT as our primary accounting system. We use all modules from AP to AR, Fixed Assets, GL ect. We like that it addresses our fund accounting complexity. We use it to track over 3,500 individual donor accounts at our foundation. Using projects for each different fund allows us to keep them all separate. Keeping them separate by project allows us to create custom reporting through a 3rd party to disseminate to campus users.
  • Separates accounts by project for fund tracking
  • Tracks AP
  • Manages fixed assets
  • Reconciliation between bank register and general ledger
  • Adjusting for partial sales of fixed assets
  • Editing credit memos after they have been applied
Fund accounting works well through Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT. We have 3 funds and are able to keep gift accounts in fund 2 separate by project. This allows us to track investments on the account level and report out to users easily.

I use Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT to run reports, track projects & invoices and run daily cash balances. And several other things.
  • Runs fantastic reports
  • Ease of use from a user standpoint
  • Regions bank cards
  • Bank reconciliation
  • bank info not loading completely. If i don't get everything from the bank feed , i ignore it all and do it manually. it's too much work if it doesn't all load. this happens regularly
  • the green dot of death is frustrating when it happens.
  • Running queries out of database view
I run a daily balance report daily and I am able to pull my information from Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT quickly and easily

I have been using Blackbaud since March 2013. When Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT became available in 2022(?), we upgraded to the web version. Our main focus in using Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT started as Accounts Payables, and Financial Statements. I have recently added Budget. There is so much capability within Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT that we have just scratched the surface of. Their support team is very quick to respond to concerns and can almost always "fix" what I can't seem to figure out.
  • Entering Journal Entries - the feel is that of Excel and I like it.
  • Financial Reporting - tons of options! Anything a board member would ask me for.
  • Budget module is easy to use as well with lots of options.
  • It would be impossible to please every user. Some like the "old" way. As in database view. It is hard to take time to learn new things sometimes.
  • Any missing functionality can be discussed on the community forum and if enough user have the same opinion, Blackbaud is good at considering changing things.
  • Journal Entries are much easier to use now than when we went live with Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT. And they continue to improve the functionality.
My major concern before going with a web-based Financial System was the fact that we are located 12 miles from the closest town and I was afraid that our internet would fail me, but so far we have had reliable internet.
Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT has as much or as less for a company to choose from. The cost associated with it could be prohibitive to some smaller companies. We are a 501c3 and as costs keep rising, there is a need to watch spending. But as I am often reminded, "Accounting is a necessary evil and the better equipped I am the better the company will be.

Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT is our general ledger software/main accounting software and expense management software. We use it for credit card expense submittals and approvals, invoice and other payment requests submittals and approvals, general accounts payable, cash receipts, bank reconciliations, investment reconciliation, budget management, general ledger activity, financial reporting, financial statements, etc.

Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT expense management has been great for us. Being able to set up approval rules and access for specific budgets and how easy it is to manage and adjust as needed has been great. It is a very user-friendly interface, so it's easy to train on and use. The custom management reports help make tracking projects a lot easier and has made our budget process so much easier. It is not a live tracking system throughout the year, rather than a big, time consuming project once a year to get it pushed out.

Using Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT - while implementation took a while - having the ability to view the trial balance and other reports with unposted transactions in the general ledger made it possible for us to fine-tune it and make sure we had it exactly as we needed it before posting and finalizing the initial data put into the system. I like the flexibility in our chart of accounts and the ability to use projects when warranted, but not required in all areas.
  • User interface and ease of use
  • Expense Management and Credit Card Workflows
  • Filtering on reports and ability to use unposted transactions
  • Dashboards
  • Some of the business rules and system wide configurations - like splitting fixed assets.
  • The rules of when things can be adjusted is not consistent across all modules.
  • The "mock" close is a pain and makes some reporting extremely confusing.
  • The fact that entire funds close to one retained earning account, rather than being able to specify a retained earning account based on the revenue or expense coding is a system issue. That function, in particular, is very common in the NFP space.
I would recommend Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT to any nonprofit and actually a lot of for profit organizations. I could see it being good for higher education obviously. I would not recommend Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT to smaller organizations or those that do not understand GAAP really well because some of the system settings take a good understanding of GAAP and accounting to work around.

In my role as an accountant, I use Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT to upload deposits, apply payments, run general ledger reports, research transactions, create new projects, upload documentation to invoices and agreements, create vendors, and research account activity. The benefit of utilizing this system is that when researching any sort of transaction, invoice, ledger, project or account there are search bars and filters that help narrow the scope of the information so the specific information can be found easily. Rather than sorting through manually thousands of files, or narrowing a date range and searching through multiple transactions, you can type in the name or deposit/payment ID into the search bar and the matching material will pull.
  • Uploading and inputting information is easy due to a clear format and outline.
  • Researching and finding past information is quick and easy to navigate due to searching and filtering options as well as the ability to name the files for quick searches.
  • Pulling project titles and accounts - you can have a large amount of projects and accounts and are able to know them through the system without having to memorize each individual title.
  • Being able to export a general ledger for an account to excel while still being formatted correctly.
  • Having the ability to filter in what transactions are pulled in the general ledger. You are able to easily look at all the activity or only activity in a certain time frame or other specific filters.
  • There is always access to help from Blackbaud services for any sort of difficulty.
  • Learning and the ability to attend Blackbaud classes are readily and easily available so you can increase your knowledge and ability to serve well in your organizations' role.
  • I would find it helpful to be able to search by payment amount.
  • When pulling a general ledger being able to see the names of the unposted activity.
  • When looking at the general ledger having the payment id or the deposit id also available so you can easily navigate to the deposit or payment directly.
I would absolutely recommend this system to anyone looking for a financial system. The accessibility, the ease of use, and the depth of the system is widely useful for any purpose. Being able to accurately record deposits and payments as well as the ease in returning to any deposit or payment later is incredibly helpful when auditing. To be able to go back into a payment find where it was applied in Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT and then also have the ability to upload the bank statement for secure documentation is certainly a helpful feature to any organization. I would recommend it because the system is incredibly user-friendly and offers the ability to grow your knowledge of financial management through courses. If the organization did not have a large profit, then I would recommend building the business so that the many applications and benefits that Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT has to offer would then be more applicable to the business. Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT would still be incredibly beneficial to a small business, but the range of opportunities and benefits that it offers is very well suited for larger organizations.

Financial Edge NXT is a full-featured business accounting system built for nonprofits. We use it for all of our finance-related tracking, including employee reimbursement, payroll, AR/AP, expense tracking, credit card management, all of our reporting, etc.
  • Fully customized, multi-layered account number setup, so that every line represents exactly what you want to track.
  • Ledger-based so you have total control over every transaction.
  • Web-based user interface is very user-friendly and intuitive.
  • Excellent customer service and training resources.
  • User-friendly interface.
  • It's a big, complex system. There are many moving parts, and as a result, sometimes it's hard to figure where you went wrong when something doesn't look like it should.
  • There is a learning curve before you will feel fully comfortable. I feel as though I am still learning after five years using the system.
FENXT is very well-suited for organizations with complex or extensive financial structures. While the system was originally designed for organizations with accounting departments, my org has one person in Finance and this system is still very appropriate. If your finances are easily handled by QuickBooks and your auditor does not need information your QuickBooks can't provide, you don't need FENXT. However, if you've outgrown the limited nonprofit capabilities of QB, FENXT is the right choice because of its flexibility and customizability.

I have used Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT for 5 years. I appreciate Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT more than the database view but understand the importance of both. I utilize all of the accounting functions and like the user-friendly interface. There have been times when the functions that we need are momentarily down, but Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT is good at communicating these issues and the status of resolutions through the status webpage. The knowledgebase page is very helpful for common issues that other users have had. I look forward to what Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT has to offer with the conversion to Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT from the database.
  • Excel to Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT integration and add ins
  • Attachment allowance with Journal Entries and Invoices
  • Journal Entry line movement functionality
  • Database functions that do not exist in Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT, like custom reports
  • Query only available in database
Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT is well suited for our organization involved in investment income and grantmaking. I have also used this system with a non-profit school and found it to be very useful. There are many functions that are able to add as needed to Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT which has also been very helpful.

We use the BB suite for our student database and fundraising and website as well as FE NXT. One factor is choosing BB was that it included all modules and was integrated. However, this is not exactly what happens in all cases. Our Tuition Mgmt did not originally integrate, and RE does not integrate with FE
  • I like the vendor invoice upload capability
  • Drilling down into detail is good
  • The budget upload is really hard to do
  • FE does not easily integrate with RE.
  • Our implementation process was terrible and we were not trained properly
  • Fixed asset module is a little wonky
  • the credit card process from Regions was long and drawn out and then the list serve started talking a lot about the reporting coming over to BB or on BB's side was duplicating. we had gone pretty far down the process and decided to not to continue
  • We were supposed to have a checkin from our Enrollment specialist in Tuition Management but that did not happen and caused an embarrasing mistake on our end.
  • We had a glitch with the Enrollment contract that could have been avoided if our implementation person had told us to check a box about the deposit - since for some people it did not collect it
We've had so many problems with the implementation and then with Expense management and getting training it is really hard for me to recommend Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT (FE) to anyone. We were told that training and implementation were by "project" yet when we did not implement or use something that we paid for we were not given a refund, but conversely, when we used our allotted "hours" devoted to a project we were cut off from training and support. After MANY emails and conversations, this was remedied to a point but it has left such a sour taste that I am very down on BlackBaud (BB).

I first began with Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT in Accounts Payable and payroll. I now primarily use it for payroll only. I will create invoices for manual payroll checks that need to be re-issued, and then print them through the treasury features. I also use the database view to upload payroll GL entries, and web view to manage GL accounts and entries after the upload.
  • Entering invoices with defaults auto-filling based on vendor set-up
  • Reporting features are fairly straight forward and relatively easy to use
  • Lots of customizable configuration options to make it work for your business
  • The automatic interfund GL entries feature doesn't work in the actual GL entry feature in database mode if you have more than two companies/funds (i.e. - we have PR, PH and PA - if we do a GL entry and it involves all three funds, the entries are way off - they seem to only run them through one fund, which isn't accurate. In AP/AR, this feature works great .....but not in the GL end when more than two funds are being used.
  • Reports are more robust and seem to have more accurate information in Database view; it'd be nice to be equal in web view or database.
  • Also, for reporting, in web view, you can show unposted entries in your reports - it's really difficult to find this feature in database mode.
  • Fix the print function in web view - it always requires a download - functional, but the extra steps are annoying.
It's very well suited for managing Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable. It also does a great job on the accounting end, but some functionalities could be improved (see previous question). It would be great if there was more cohesion between web view and database view, as the functionality in web view is better and looks better, but I still find numerous things I have to use database view for; it'd be great not to have to jump back and forth.

I use this software to manage and process accounts receivables and grants.
  • multiples formats offered for report export, including excel data easy to use
  • provide multiple platforms--including desktop application and web based
  • offer multiple, easy to use filters to run reports
  • multiple webinars offered consistently to help explain and present software features
  • There doesn't seem to be any A/R or accounts receivable functions on web based interface for some reason, which is greatly needed especially as the desktop interface appears very outdated, hard to view and adjust view settings, needs additional access and steps--thereby making it harder to do this work from anywhere, and so forth.
  • It would be helpful to have more grants management functionality as part of web based functions.
  • It would be helpful to have more options offered for grants or A/R reports.
  • There is a definite need to include and track FTEs more on projects and clients, to properly track grants financially not just for internal purposes but also for a variety of audits and to comply properly with federal guidelines. This is crucial but yet still missing.
  • It would be helpful if user/companies didn't always have to buy additional software programs and modules to add a variety of functionality often offered already as components included in competing software.
I think it's well suited for most accounting type of work, however very unsuited and lacking to help manage grants. So I would not recommend to any friend or company that works heavily with grants.

I am in charge of doing the accounts payable. FENXT has been so much more user-friendly than our previous software. It is easy to learn and easy to use.
  • Easy to get from, let's say an invoice into the vendor file.
  • Attachments are easy to find.
  • I love the personalizations you can do within FENXT.
  • Easy to look up information.
  • I think the 1099 section is hard to use within the database view.
  • Dashboards don't seem to work very well.
Although I am new to FENXT I have found it very easy to use as far as accounts payable goes. I need to learn more about reporting as I have a hard time finding the right report that I am looking for.

I use Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT do reconcile bank statements, Fixed Assets, deposits, run accounting reports.
  • The way they have their deposits setup in the database is well done. It is very simple, and all the options are right there.
  • I like the way fixed assets record the information and the history option.
  • I would like to see an option to attach documents in the database. Also, to be able to attach deposit documents in the web view.
  • Query could be a little simple, to run special reports.

We use Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT as our company's complete accounting solution. We are a non-profit in the higher education space, raising resources for an affiliated community college, so it was of primary importance to have a product that integrated well with our donor database management solution, which is currently Raiser's Edge NXT. Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT easily handles the unique demands of nonprofit accounting for tracking net assets in restricted and unrestricted classes, in all ledgers. Because the two products are integrated, gift processing and reconciliation are part of a seamless workflow.
  • Robust tools for custom reports ("Chart Organizer") and dashboard design
  • Integration with financial institutions for real-time updates to bank registers and purchase card activity
  • Media storage - this product allows for attachments at every level, so that documentation for every journal entry, deposit, invoice, vendor, and payment is immediately at hand, which has revolutionized the annual audit process for me, and particularly for remote audits post-COVID.
  • Drop the "database view" and provide all functionality within the "web view" of the product. It's annoying to have to jump back and forth to take care of certain tasks.
  • Add the ability to search by transaction amount.
  • In a payment distribution where amounts are split between Projects sometimes, the system changes the distribution when posting to a percentage-based split rather than the specific amounts I entered, causing the splits to be off by cents. This can go unnoticed until individual Projects are found to be slightly out of balance, forcing otherwise unnecessary journal entries.
  • Dashboard data is not refreshed often enough.
Because of the flexibility in account string composition, I think this product is well-suited to non-profit organization accounting. The ability to add multiple Transaction codes (on top of the Project codes) has allowed me to easily manage tracking of restricted and unrestricted transaction activity. Thinking this through carefully before implementation has allowed us to easily create reports needed by our auditors and for preparation of the 990. Within a single account string I can see whether a transaction line item is unrestricted, temporarily restricted or permanently restricted, and if an expense, which functional category it belongs in.

Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT manages all our grant tracking needs for AR,AP, and Financial Budgets. It tracks expenses for each project so we can compare and report on each grant and category separately. Along with Budget to actual monthly reports. Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT is the best tool I have used in the 32 years of my career, most of which has been non-profit accounting. It is very easy to learn and understand in the web view. They are making enhancements to the web view often.
  • Separate project accounting
  • Easily reclass expenses by Invoice
  • Reporting is easy to understand
  • Journal entries can be copied and edited
  • Accounts Receivable is not the most user friendly module
  • Some feature to consolidate Project FS, and have each in a column for reporting
  • I wish AP entries were updated in real time, not just when you validate and post
Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT is very well suited for multiple grants/projects and tracking for each project separately. The AR function is not very clear on what is receivable, and making write-off adjustments is by Journal Entry. I wish I knew more advanced usage of the program because I feel there is much it can do, but we do not know how to use it. What I know, I enjoy using it.

Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT is used to maintain all accounting records for the school.
  • Provides 2 interfaces: Web view and database view
  • Database view allows for more functionality
  • In my experience, implementation process was a complete nightmare
  • In my opinion, customer support is severely lacking. In my experience, it is extremely difficult getting support to understand issues, and when help is provided users are referred to "go read an article" for the solution
  • In my experience, the system is NOT flexible and cannot be easily adapted to unique circumstances

I use Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT for all things Accounts Payables, including invoices, purchase orders, and credit card expense reporting. I also use it for end-of-year 1099 reporting.

  • Processing invoices
  • Would like to enter credits directly into Purchase Orders
  • For purchase orders, would like to be able to Receipt All for a specific date, not today's date

Great for basic processing of invoices and payables in general. 1099s are fairly simple, as long as it is kept up with throughout the year.

  • User friendly
  • Useful reports
  • When pulling up a vendor, I would like a popup to alert for special information.
  • I do not like that we can no longer post from the dataview side.

Staff and I use it mostly for general ledger and project reporting. We prefer to use the Database View (Citrix) because that is what we learned and are experienced with. A big problem for us is that NXT does not support Accounts Receivable which is a very important part of our business. Blackbaud has announced that they will take away our Database View at some time in the future, so I have been trying to use NXT more in order to learn it. In doing this, I've learned that some basic bank account functionality is not available on NXT--things like pre-reconciliation reports. The Database View has to be used for this ability. I prefer the general ledger and project reporting over Database View. It just seems easier to build and process the reports and their outputs.
  • Reporting
  • Ability to add attachments to some records
  • Functionality for Accounts Receivable
  • Full reporting for bank reconciliations
It's accounting software, so.... We definitely can't manage our A/R or bank reconciliations with it in its present state.

It's not as user-friendly as the database version. I use it for reporting, but it seems to take longer to process the reports than the database version does.
  • Reporting format in Excel
  • Finding reports in search box is nice
  • Add everything from the database view to NXT
  • Exporting Reports should be one click and quicker
  • Automated Bank rec/imports
I honestly use the database version 99% of the time because that's what we started with and NXT doesn't have a lot of the same functionality.
